The best upholstery fabric is not simply the one you like on a small sample. It needs to work at furniture scale, suit the construction of the piece and cope with the room, people, pets and sunlight around it.
Begin with use
A formal chair used occasionally can tolerate a different fabric from a family sofa used every day. Tell your upholsterer about children, pets, food, direct sunlight and how often the furniture is used. This narrows the choice before colour becomes the deciding factor.
Ask about durability
Upholstery fabrics are commonly tested for abrasion resistance, but a high number alone does not guarantee suitability. Weave, fibre, backing, seam performance and cleaning instructions all matter. Commercial settings may also have specific fire-safety and performance requirements.
Consider pattern at full scale
A large repeat can look wonderful on a broad sofa but may be difficult to centre on small chair panels. Pattern matching can also increase the fabric quantity required. View the biggest sample available and photograph it beside the furniture and other room finishes.

Think about sunlight and colour
Strong daylight can fade many materials over time. Dark or highly saturated colours may show change more readily, while very pale fabrics may display everyday marks. There is no universal answer—only the best balance for your room.
Check cleaning instructions
Do not assume every fabric can be wet-cleaned or treated with household products. Understand the care code and whether loose covers are actually designed to be removed and cleaned.
Order with the whole piece in mind
Piping, buttons, pattern placement, nap direction and matching pieces affect how the final furniture looks. A professional estimate should allow for the real construction rather than relying only on surface measurements.
